A young raccoon has been fishing this creek and has finally caught a crawdad, or as some people call them, a crayfish. Raccoons have a funny way of feeling around and touching foods without seeming to look at it, so you will seldom see them focusing their eyes on what they are doing. The reason for this is a need for situational awareness in a world full of predators, but also because they have such an extraordinary amount of sensory tissue in their paws that they don’t need to look at what they are fiddling around with. They can feel and inspect what they are holding much better than we can with our hands.
I included my grandmother’s favorite wildflower, wild phlox, in the background, a plant which some know as Wild Sweet William. This native American beauty was named by Scots-Irish settlers after a historical figure from European history.
Also included is Christmas Fern, so named because it is evergreen even in the winter and its lively green fronds were sometimes used for festive decor in the wintery Christmas holiday season.
The original painting was 20 x 24 inches and was painted on Masonite hardboard.
