Here is a fun example of custom painted tiles, before installing and grouting which, by the way, made them look stunning. This is not a fired glaze but rather Vitrea 160, a transparent, heat set glossy glass paint by Pebeo, which can be hardened in an ordinary kitchen oven and which comes in a nice selection of colors, many more than you see here.

While not as hard or permanent as a true ceramic glaze, the paint, which is applied over commercial ceramic glazed tiles, is as tough as an enameled surface.

It can be gently cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and ordinary kitchen cleaner or dish soap, but like Formica, should not be cleaned with anything abrasive, including cleanser, or those common white “magic” cleaning sponges.

The Pebeo paint has held up very well in this hard-used kitchen for over 22 years. It has a look and feel much like watercolor paint, very runny and transparent, and it is also very lightfast. As near as I can tell, none of the colors show any signs of fading, though there is some slight wear on a tile or two closest to the stove.

You can also obtain a stained glass effect on glass using Pebeo liner in black, copper, or lead color which is quite thick and will make a pleasing raised border in which you can puddle and manipulate the paint.

You do have to diligently clean any oil or grease from the glass, tile or porcelain before applying the paint. And, you may consider using a fine grit automotive finishing sandpaper for added tooth.

Never forget that the most important part of painting is thorough surface preparation. If unsure, as the paint manufacturer for advice, do not be shy. And it is a good practice to experiment and test any paint you buy on any surface you intend to use for wear strength and lightfastness, especially in the same conditions in which it will be displayed.
