Immigrant Son ~ Ringneck Pheasant and Bobwhites

‘Immigrant Son~ Ring Neck Pheasant and Bobwhite Quail,’ original wildlife art by Susan A Walton , Hudson, FL

Ringneck Pheasants are an introduced species of Asian game birds, while Bobwhites are natives to North America. in this scene, a ringneck encounters a trio of curious bobwhite quail beside a babbling brook at the edge of a wood in the Midwest.

I occasionally saw these two species as I travelled the Great River Road in the broad floodplain along the Mississippi known as the American Bottoms, and in the corn fields and hedgerows on the bluffs overlooking the bottoms.

For a while there I would see one or a small group of pheasant come out of cover near Horseshoe Lake and look for food alongside the road. They either found some insects or worms in that damp soil to their liking, or else were finding spilled grain left by the farm trucks on their way to the area granaries, I never determined which.

This piece is painted on an archival polymer board which can be a delight to paint on but lacks the rigidity and heft of hardboard and also lacks the resiliency of canvas, so I opted to frame this original under glass with a mat. This type of site face can also be attached to a rigid cradled hardboard if glass is not desired.
