Now, this is an interesting type of bracket fungus, growing on an oak log we had outside a friend’s welding shop. It has a velvet like texture on the top, and an elegant yellow border. There are pores on the underside and the mushroom is fairly meaty, which makes me wonder if it is edible, useful as a flavoring in soup like the better known turkey tail mushroom. 

(Note : a week or so later the border disappeared and the top surface has lost the velvet texture. The fungus is now a. handsome mottled deep caramel color.)
